Bow Loops Cutting Guides

These cutting guides are a set of 4 different width strips. Each strip is approximately 11.75" long. Widths are 1/4", 3/4", 1.5" and 2". Each strip has a mark at the half way point making each end approx. 5.8" long if the strip is cut in half.

To use simply roll out gum paste or air drying clay at least 12.5" long and as wide as you want, being no thicker than 1/16".  Lay your strip on top of the rolled out medium, use a rolling cutter to cut one side then the other. Move your strip over next to the inside cut and line the edge up with the cut. Roll your cutter down the uncut side. Move over again and repeat until you cannot get any additional cuts from the width.  Next, lay your cutter beside your strips and use the center mark as a cutting spot and cut across all strips. Then cut the top and bottom into a straight line.

Have 1/4 length white floral wires ready. Use edible glue for gum paste and white glue for air drying clay. Along one narrow edge, paint a bit of glue onto each piece. USE GLUE SPARINGLY! Place about 1/4" of the wire over the glue, laying in the same direction as the strip. Fold the unglued side over the glued side and work this into a point by rolling between your thumb and forefinger, securing the wire into the loop. Hang on a 1" diameter wooden dowel to dry making sure the wire is hanging straight down.

A package bow will take approx 20 loops that are 3/4" wide. When completely dry, start with a center loop and attach white floral tape at the top of the wire. Next, take 4 loops and bend the wire directly under the loop to a 90 degree angle, then add 4 loops each 1/4 of the way around. This forms your second row. Next bend wires and add loops below those starting inbetween two loops from the row above. Continue adding in all the loops forming about 4 rows. After all loops are taped together, bring the tape all the way to the end of the wires. Use a flower pick inserted into the cake to hold the wires for the bow. Rows consist of 1 loop for the center. Next row has 4 loops, then 7 loops and finally 8 loops. Try not to allow your floral tape to come down the wires. This will make a very open long bow.

The bow will look like a ribbon package bow.

Narrower strips will take more loops and wider strips will take fewer loops. For a 3/4" wide strip, I make 20 loops. For a 2" wide strip, I only make 10 to 11 loops.

If you want tails, cut a half lengths strip. Cut one end either with a "V" cut or an anged cut. Paint glue on opposite end, lay wire over the glued area and fold each side over the wire. Now form into a taper and dry over a paper towel roll, over a flower former or whatever will gie you the shape you want for your tail. I like diagonally over an empty paper towel cardboard roll.
